INSS reactivation: how to do it

We are so focused on keeping our bills up to date and managing our routine that, sometimes, we leave aside basic things, such as updating the Single Registry (CadÚnico). Without it, the Continuous Payment Benefit (BPC/Loas) could be canceled and become a headache for people who need the assistance. However, there is already a way to solve the problem, as the Meu INSS app already gives you the chance to reactivate the payment.

The good news was released this month by the Brazilian Institute of Social Security Law (IBDP). An ordinance that gave the rules for this to be possible also allows people to go to the Meu INSS website or even call 135 to reactivate their BPC registration. If you opt for in-person assistance, simply go to a Social Security Agency. But first, the person must schedule their appearance.

However, for people to have their registration updated they must follow the scheme given by the National Social Security Institute (INSS). First, the person must go to a Reference and Social Assistance Center (Cras) where they live. Afterwards, the period for the activation of the canceled aid to occur is up to 30 days, without delay. Later, you will understand more about reactivating the BPC and understand the step-by-step process of updating the benefit and renewing it.

Reactivation: what is the BPC like?

In practice, the BPC will keep the amount that has already been paid. In other words, in the amount of R$ 1212.00, however the 13th salary is not yet available for payment of the benefit. Aid is also still paid to beneficiaries who have a disability or are elderly. In both cases, low income must be proven.

Information about the deadline was released by the president of IBDP, Adriane Bramante. She stated that people's difficulty in receiving the benefit because they had not updated their CadÚnico was very common and prevented beneficiaries from receiving the BPC:

Before there was no regulation and that was it. Unless the server entered the system, updated the data and activated the assistance again. Now the beneficiary himself can request the activation of the BPC.

How reactivation happens

When the list of beneficiaries is complete, the Ministry of Citizenship sends the people's data to the INSS. Then, the institute will observe people's data and, based on that, carry out the renewal. Now, with the ordinance, there is no longer a requirement to verify the request date to reactivate the benefit through CadÚnico.

Another detail about the INSS is that the other benefits will be renewed in a non-centralized way, with manual processes. The lack of withdrawal and the lack of proof of life were previously included in the BPC payment rules. With the change that IBDP brought to light, it will not be necessary to see if CadÚnico has any updates regarding these situations.

Benefits that may be suspended and other tips about the app

People who receive benefits through the INSS should know more about some programs, because there is a chance of suspension if any details about the beneficiaries are missing or some other problem. For example, there may be cancellation for:

  • Retirements;
  • Disability benefits (permanent or temporary);
  • Accident assistance;
  • Continuous Payment Benefit.

The way to check the benefit and see if it has, in fact, been reactivated is very simple. Just open the Meu INSS app and then click on “Check orders”. The app will show a list and you just need to see if your order is there. To find out more, go to “detail”.

And, if you haven't requested reactivation yet, the way through the app is very practical too. When opening the Meu INSS app, click on “New order”. Then, go to the option BPC (or other assistance, if you do not receive this benefit). Just like renewal, the app shows a list of all the benefits and then you just have to read the text about the option and enter your details and the app will ask for it. At the end, the app shows the option “Reactivate the benefit”: in this part, you have to click on the benefit, check if everything is ok and that’s it. Just click “Next”.

Essential differences in registration

As for documentation, users of the Meu INSS app must have their CPF and benefit number to renew. These proofs are mandatory. Already the non-mandatory, that is, which are provided only if requested, are the power of attorney or representation document in accordance with the law. For this optional item, you can enter a guardianship term, a custody term or even a liability term.

Furthermore, there is another important difference. Suspension and cancellation of benefits are distinct from each other, because while the act of suspending can be reversed, the moment a benefit ends, the person receiving it no longer receives assistance. In other words, if, on the one hand, the first one can have a review, the cancellation is definitive. The only case in which the cancellation has any changes is through the courts and, therefore, it becomes more delicate and bureaucratic to go back and have the benefit guaranteed again.
